Virtual Scavenger Hunt

Our group has found. URL address for W3C, Shopping Cart, Travel Itinerary, 3 matchmaking websites, Andrew Fry as a panelist for Digital Hollywood, 2 homes on zillow.redfin, 3 general search engines... I made this post earlier thinking it was one of the things to do on the scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt was actually pretty difficult. I think that if we had more time maybe we could have found most of them but it was definitely very difficult.

Technology Convergence

Technology convergence is taking one single device and making it do tasks of several different devices. An example would be a cell phone. Cell phones and telephones in general were created for the sole purpose to talk to the person on the other end. Cell phones now a days have full keyboards, email, music players, windows operating systems, cameras, video recorders, GPS navigation, games, phonebooks, the internet, and even television.

Physical Documents Vs. Virtual

Physical documents have been around for a long time where as Virtual documents have only become popular in the last 10 years. Many companies are trying to use paperless billing or use less paper in general. Have you noticed that many companies, maybe including your job, have gone to direct deposit now? The reason is because it is easier and more efficient to make a transaction rather then print out papers. Even though this has become the way our world is deciding to go by, it makes some things very hard to do. When you have a physical document you are able to store and file your records in a safe place. You can do this as well on your computers; but what happens when you get a virus, your computer crashes, or your favorite website for storing information goes down? I think one thing to keep in mind when deciding to keep files virtually is that just as easy as it is to store files remember that it can disappear just as fast.

Vanity Search: iSPY Jasmine

I did a vanity search and i found various information. First i typed in JasmineScott.com to see if my domain was already taken. Yes it was by someone i beleive that does music so there's no hope on getting that Domain Name unless her website goes down. As far as the vanity search i typed my name into the google search bar (there are alot of Jasmine Scott's). So i looked for jasmine scott in tacoma, wa. Still there were alot of sites that came up. So i thought about what i have done in the community. I typed in Jasmine Scott Basketball. I came up on the third page or so under a website title Letter of Intents. When i type in the user name i use for majority of my favorite sights all the websites i belonged to came up with my profile. It is very interesting to see what comes up when you look yourself up. I think the more you put yourself out there and the more your known publicly depends on how much information you can find on your vanity search. I encourage you to try it. There are also different ways you can look for information on yourself rather than googling your name. You can try websites like 123people.com and see how much info they have on you. You will be surprised. Even if you don't think you use the internet very much i bet we can still find something on you.

Mark Briggs on Serra Media

Mark Briggs who is actually the co-founder of a software called Serra Media and the author of Journalism 2.0 - How To Survive & Thrive came into class today. He spoke on how his business runs by creating a social mapping platform that allows newspaper to build websites based off of local news. He also discussed another way his company took the software and invested in Bargain Babe which is a local shopping blog. This was huge because now people can know where to go shopping locally for best deals and what not. Mark also discussed different aspects of how companies like this actually make profit and also since he lives in Tacoma he wants to bring this type of community online into the south sound.

21st Century Publishing

News paper companies are constantly making budget cuts this day in age. The news paper used to be the way of communicating through a community. Everything was and still is pubished in the news paper..daily news, articles, games, ads, etc. But with the growth of the internet news papers have been able to post news and articles online on their websites. People find it easier and more convienient to just look online. Also most people's homepages have all the news posted right on the page (ex: yahoo, comcast). The internet has also made many companies start the go green process where everything is now paperless cause we have access to it on the internet. News papers are just not selling except for to schools, and businesses. Really what is the point of paying for the news paper when everything you need is provided on your internet that your already paying for? The one valuable part of the news paper that i enjoy is the sunday paper, but other than that i have no need for the paper.
